The Great Allentown Fair is 160 years old this year and runs from August 28 – September 3, 2012. As always, it features lots of great food, rides, animal shows and exhibits, music, history, and shopping! Truly fun for all ages, I was determined to convince my family to go on Wednesday evening, 8/29/12. Here you see a picture of our VP and President (Beth & Rick Hauler). I can’t believe I go them to do this!
The fair is easily a whole day adventure, if not two! I was there with my parents (President and VP of Penn Windows and Richards Window Fashion, Beth & Rick Hauler, owners of Richards Window Fashions), and all three Beth & Rick Hauler, owners of Richards Window Fashions of my teenage children. I wish we could have seen everything, but we did compile our “must see” list which includes Robinson’s Pig Paddling Porkers pig racing, Wild About Monkeys show, and Elephant Encounter show and exhibit. We like animals! The miniature Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs were adorable and I was amazed at how well they swam! The Monkey show was very cute – the baboons were an unexpected treat – and there was plenty of audience participation. And you have to see the elephants eat watermelons! I’m sad to say I missed the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show and did not have the opportunity to walk through the Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show exhibit. We played the candy wheel game (only $.25 to play!), threw darts at balloons (my daughter was REALLY good!), practiced our aim with water and pellet guns, and watched one of my sons try to climb the rock wall (yeah . . . not so good). Even the food was reasonable – and there was so much of it! There was also a lot of seating behind and around the food vendors so you don’t have to try to walk and eat your elephant ear! My kids had a blast on the rides! I was very surprised at how reasonable everything was! It was only $20 for a wristband for a day of unlimited rides, and even the sideshow animal oddity exhibits were only $.50 – $2. Yes – we saw the world’s smallest horse AND the world’s largest rat… totally worth it! And if you wander around, you never know what you’ll find! My youngest son got to bang on hot metal on an anvil and make a hook! (Check out the blacksmiths across from the Elephant Encounter!) So much to see and do! If you missed the Allentown Fair this year – put it on your list for next year! Hope to see you there!
